  Have You Seen Yousie?

There have been Yousie the Bookworm sightings all over University City! Yousie (pronounced UC) is a 4-foot-tall wooden character who can be found reading in over 10 different secret locations around the community. A contest has been designed to challenge elementary school students to find Yousie the Bookworm at these 10 sites.

The University City Community Building Project (UCCBP) has partnered with the University City Magazine and with initial sponsorship assistance from Wachovia and TIAA-CREF has developed a contest designed to recognize the educational opportunities in University City and highlight various points of interest in our area. The contest is open to elementary school aged children between kindergarten and 5th grade, although we hope the young at heart will look for Yousie as well!

The first five children to report the 10 site locations will have their photo in the March issue of the University City Magazine and will receive a free t-shirt, compliments of the University City YMCA.
Students can submit their list of locations online by clicking here or may mail their list of locations along with their full name, age, address, e-mail address and phone number to:

University City YMCA
Attn: UCCBP Contest
8100 Old Mallard Creek Road
Charlotte, NC 28262

All entries must be received no later than Tuesday, January 31, 2006.

This lovable bookworm is a symbol of the life long learning that takes place in University City. From pre-school to graduate school, you can satisfy your intellectual curiosity without ever leaving the area. This is something that no other area of Charlotte can boast.

Members of the University City community are grateful for the quality of education available here. Latonya Graham has two children that currently attend University City schools. She stated, “There is a true commitment on the part of the educators to provide quality instruction and encourage excellence. I also appreciate the fact that my children get to build a sense of community in an environment that is naturally diverse.”

Jennica Rhodes, a senior at UNC Charlotte and Communications major, loves the campus’ location, “because of a healthy business community that makes for an easy transition after graduation.”

No matter what their age, University City residents can appreciate the vast array of educational opportunities that Yousie the Bookworm symbolizes. This contest is designed to highlight all that we are and all you can see in UC. Happy hunting!

The “Find Yousie the Bookworm Contest” is just one of two community service projects being completed by the University City Community Building Project (UCCBP) Leadership Academy’s class of ‘05. Two separate groups of graduates are working on community service projects that will be presented at the upcoming Faces of Leadership Summit in February 2006. The second group’s project highlighting University City’s pride and focus on being a “green community” will be reported in next month’s issue of University City Magazine.
