2006 Leadership Summit Recap

February 2006 -
The University City Community Building Project (UCCBP) held its second annual University City Leadership Summit on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at the UNC Charlotte Barnhardt Student Center.

The participants were welcomed by Bill Scurry, Co-Chair of the UCCBP Steering Committee and Master of Ceremony for the event. Following the welcome the participants engaged in a "Linking Leaders" networking session lead by Mardee Woodward.

Scott Padgett, Mayor of Concord; Susan Burgess, Mayor Pro-Tem of Charlotte; and Michael Barnes, City Councilman for District 4 each gave their perspective of what leadership means and shared lessons they have learned in leadership over the years as public servants. All encouraged those in attendance to continue to get involved and stay informed of government issues.

UCCBP Co-Chair Dr. Kevin Toomb gave the next presentation, which focused on the new social capital survey data collected by the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute. (

To celebrate the success of the first Leadership Academy class launched in the fall 2005, participants made presentations on community projects including the Yousie Bookworm Image Campaign and the Get Connected Maps.

The event also included comments from key partners, including the UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dr. Phil Dubois, Pat Martinez of the Charlotte Chamber and Grace Watkins of University City Partners. State Senator Malcolm Graham made final comments closing the event.

There were 100 community members from all backgrounds in attendance, including representatives from UNCC staff, members of area Home Owners Associations, University City Area Chamber members, University City Partners board members, leaders from local faith-based organizations, staff from Charlotte Mecklenburg schools and representatives from the local media.
