117 Participate in First UCCBP Leadership Summit

FEBRUARY 2005 - The UCCBP successfully held its first University City Leadership Summit on Tuesday morning February 15, 2005 at the UNC Charlotte Barnhardt Student Center.

The participants were welcomed by Chancellor Woodward and lead through the program by Master of Ceremony Rahman Kahn of Diversity Matters. The Mayors of Concord, Harrisburg and Charlotte all offered their perspective of what leadership means, inspiring those in attendance to be involved citizens in the community.

Following the Mayors were UCCBP co-chair Kevin Toomb and Implementation Team member Michael DeVaul who shared statistical information about University City and touched on the organizations currently advocating for the area. (Click here to see the presentation.)

Keynote speaker Dr. Jim Johnson shared demographic data and described the challenges community leaders face in today’s global environment. He noted that communities like University City are the benchmark for the future and we must not blink, rather get to work planning for the future now. (Click here to view the keynote presentation.)

In attendance were 117 community members from all backgrounds. Participants included UNCC staff, members of area Home Owners Associations, University City Area Chamber members, University City Partners board members, leaders from local faith-based organizations, staff from Charlotte Mecklenburg schools, City of Concord staff and representatives from the local media.

Breakout sessions were energized with discussion and provided feedback for the UCCBP to begin working on tasks in the primary focus areas of:

The Leadership breakout focused on what a University City Leadership Academy could look like and what planners need to concentrate on as they prepare to launch the program this coming fall.

Participants interested in getting involved with the UCCBP Action Plan can attend the next Implementation Team meeting on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at CPCC's Northeast Campus in room 225.
