How Do You Bridge the Gap Between Races and
Cultures?
Mecklenburg Ministires Answers this Question
with "Friday Friends"
February 12, 2007 - Charlotte, North Carolina
citizens are changing the way they break bread on Friday afternoons in an effort to trust and understand the commonalities
surrounding race, religion and cultural backgrounds.
The faith community led by the Executive Directors of Mecklenburg Ministries and the Charlotte Rescue Mission is
stepping forward to lead the way with events called "Friday Friends". Co-Chairs of "Friday Friends"
are Dr. James Howell, Senior Pastor of Myers Park United Methodist Church, Cecilia Ramirez, First Vice Chairman
of the Latin Chamber of Commerce Charlotte and Willie Ratchford, Executive Director of the Charlotte's Community
Relations Committee.
The goal: To sign up 500 people (250 pairs) at www.FridayFriends.org to have lunch on the last Friday of the month from March 30, 2007 through August 2007 to learn to
connect beyond the color of their skin and religious or cultural beliefs.
The mission is to identify people through the faith community and the cultural community: African American, White,
Latin, Asian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist. . . and to pair them as lunch partners. They agree to eat lunch on
the last Friday of the month for six months to get to know each other as people. . .not as "categories."
Too often people view people from a race or culture that's different from their own as "people we don't trust."
People need an outlet to extend their hand of understanding regarding race, religion and cultures. This is why
the faith community is leading the way for the Charlotte community through "Friday Friends." |
