The UCCBP's main purpose is to continue to research and examine community issues and implement the action plan developed by the UCCBP Resource Team to enhance connectivity and quality of life in the University City area.

Activities and Deliverables
Over the past two years, the UCCBP Resource Team funded and supported by The Community Building Initiative, The University City YMCA and supported by The Lee Institute commissioned research to drill down to the University City level on the same issues covered in the regional Social Capital Benchmark Survey. The group's three core charges of leadership, infrastructure and identity all begin with the identification and strengthening of indigenous leaders who represent the interests of University City's residents while respecting and nurturing its diverse people and divergent viewpoints. Following this two year research and civic engagement project and encouraged by The Community Building Initiative, the University City YMCA and The Lee Institute, a new team was formed to take the action plan and completed research and move towards implementation. The UCCBP Implementation Team was formed in October of 2004 and operates as a University City YMCA special project.

Charlotte as a whole did not rank as highly on trusting other people in general or interracial trust as did the University City area. University City's levels of trust and diversity are a unique gift, and their presence offers an opportunity for study and possible replication. The UCCBP believes that by nurturing diverse leadership in the University City area it will be possible to sustain and strengthen the high level of interracial trust that exists here, and hopefully gain enough insight into it to export tactics to strengthen it elsewhere and groom empowered leaders who have experienced its benefits first hand.

The UCCBP has two public deliverables:

  • The creation of an annual Leadership Summit event; and
  • The creation of a Leadership Academy for University City existing and emerging leaders.

In addition, the UCCBP will continue to commission research to further study the factors that contribute to its attractive mix of high diversity and high trust so that it can enhance the area's sense of community.

Area of Focus
Leadership development, including the identification, education, empowerment and inspiration of new and emerging area leaders. Research into social capital issues, primarily interracial diversity and trust. Connecting University City residents to the area and to each other by fostering a sense of community and by building social capital networks among leaders, groups and residents.
